Sioux Speedway opened their 2009 season Thursday night with a strong field of cars for the inaugural 9:1 Nationals. Thirty one Hobby Stocks were narrowed to a 24 car feature field with Wall Lake's Andy Boeckman drawing the outside front row chip along side Troy Krug. Boeckman jumped into the early lead with strong pressure from Rusty Montange. On lap 11, Kyle Robinson caught the tires guarding the front stretch wall exiting the fourth turn, sending his car into a flip that also collected the cars of Merle Bass and Josh Peters. When the red flag was lifted, Montange's second place car failed to fire, dropping him to the rear of the field. From that point on it was all Andy Boeckman as he went on to win over Justin Nehring, Troy Krug, and Justin Luinenburg.
Tom McKenzie took advantage of his pole position to power to the front of the Stock Car feature. The Sioux City driver was safely in front of a devastating wreck at the conclusion of the opening lap when Mike Jurgens hit the same tire that collected Robinson in the opening feature and launched into a series of flips in front of the back half of the field. The cars of Troy Woelber and Derrick Barglof had nowhere to go and ended up with Barglof upside down on top of Woelber's machine. McKenzie went on to lead the trio of Jeff Larson, Eli Zevenbergen, and Curt VanBeek to the checkers when the races resumed.
The B-Mod division wrapped up the evenings action with Brady Joynt and Tyler Olson leading the 24 car field to the green flag. Olson jumped to the early lead with Brock Hess, Jake Simpson, and Tim Wilcox in chase. Simpson would complete his move to the lead a few laps later and the Alta, IA pilot would set sail for the checkers, winning over Olson, Wilcox, Mark VandenTop, and Harvey VandeWeerd, who charged up to the top five from his 24th place starting spot.
The next event for Sioux Speedway will be Wednesday, July 15th during the Sioux County Youth Fair. The HRA Wingless Sprint Car series will join the Hobby Stock, Stock Car, and B-Modified divisions for the event highlighted by another fiery visit by stuntman Doctor Danger.
